Teachers’ body to honour ‘Father of Khasi Alphabet’

SHILLONG, Sep 10: The All Primary School Teachers Association (APSTA) is set to commemorate the 175th death anniversary of Rev. Thomas Jones, widely revered as “The Father of the Khasi Alphabet.” The event will also mark 182 years since the establishment of lower primary schools in the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
The celebration will take place on September 16 at the Thomas Jones School of Mission in Saitsohpen Sohra, starting at 10 am. Shella MLA and Chairman of the Meghalaya State Law Commission, Balajied Kupar Synrem, will attend as the chief guest, while Sohra MLA and Advisor to the Government of Meghalaya’s Health and Family Welfare department, Gavin Miguel Mylliem, will serve as guest of honour.
In honour of Rev. Thomas Jones’ contributions, APSTA has made donations of Rs 25,000 to the Wisdom Centre in Umdihar, Ri-Bhoi, and Rs 50,000 each to the Sanjo Mount Mercy Home, Borsing Children’s Home in Mawsmai, and the Thomas Jones School of Mission in Sohra.
