Party celebrates 27th Foundation Day
SHILLONG, Sep 11: The United Democratic Party (UDP) marked its 27th foundation day with a call to revive the regional aspirations that initially brought the party together under one banner.
During the celebration, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh reflected on the party’s legacy and its roots in the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), which played a pivotal role in the hill state movement.
“We want to continue the legacy of our founding body, APHLC, and rekindle the flame of regional unity and aspiration. We are an offshoot of the hill state movement, and it is time to bring people together again under this banner,” said Mawthoh.
Mawthoh reminded attendees that the party, founded in 1997, is one of the oldest regional political forces in Meghalaya. “We want people to remember that we are one of the oldest regional parties, and our 27-year journey has been long and significant,” he added.
The celebration was also a moment to honour the party’s stalwarts, including former Chief Ministers EK Mawlong and BB Lyngdoh, whose contributions helped shape both the party and the state. “We will continue working for the betterment of the people based on the principles and foundation laid by our leaders,” Mawthoh said.
The UDP youth wing too actively participated in the celebration by visiting two children’s shelters — God’s Dream Home and Lawei Ba Phyrnai — where they distributed food items. The day also featured a friendly football match organised by the youth wing. The event was attended by all UDP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of the District Council (MDCs).
