SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT, Sep 12: The Synjuk Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Shnong (SKKNS) of Mawsynram has issued a stern warning to the state government, threatening to withdraw from participating in government programmes if the long-standing demand to upgrade the Mawsynram C&RD Block to a Civil Subdivision is not met.
During a meeting held on Thursday, SKKNS chairman Hiambor Rapsang expressed frustration over the government’s failure to fulfill its 2018 promise to upgrade the region. “Few of the Rangbah Shnongs have suggested that the Dorbar Shnongs should stop taking part in any government programme. We do not wish to take such drastic steps, but the government’s inaction is testing our patience,” Rapsang told reporters after the meeting.
Rapsang emphasised that the upgrade would significantly benefit the local population. The Mawsynram C&RD Block covers 510 sq. km, comprising 162 villages with a population that has grown from 54,000 to over 70,000 in recent years. Despite the size and needs of the area, the government has remained unresponsive to their decade-long demand.
“We appeal to the government not to force the traditional heads to take extreme measures. It is disappointing to see how we’ve been treated like children, with promises made but never fulfilled,” Rapsang said.
The pressure on the government has intensified with the Khasi Students Union (KSU) also agitating for the same cause. The KSU South West Khasi Hills chapter has led a series of protests, including office picketing and banner campaigns across Mawsynram Block. Their agitation began three weeks ago, aiming to bring attention to the delayed declaration of the Civil Subdivision.
Rapsang urged the Conrad K Sangma-led MDA 2.0 government to act swiftly, aligning with its promise of bringing governance closer to the people. “I hope the government will not wait until the Dorbar Shnongs retaliate and withdraw their cooperation. The time has come for the administration to listen to the voice of the people of Mawsynram,” he concluded.
