KHLIEHRIAT/ TURA, Sep 29: The Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills has invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in light of the proposed Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra in Meghalaya on October 2, as the organisation has not obtained permission for the event.
The DC expressed concerns that this rally could disrupt peace and order in the district. Consequently, any public march, procession, or rally that threatens tranquility has been prohibited.
Additionally, gatherings of more than five individuals are banned, and participants are not allowed to walk together in groups exceeding five during any rally or procession. Violators will face penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
However, this order does not apply to public marches organised by recognised religions that adhere to the regulations.
The GSU from Tura on Sunday reacted strongly to the attempt being made by a cow protection group to ban beef consumption in the state and vowed that it would strongly defend the cultural traditions and freedom of its people.
“Our traditions are deeply tied to our identity as Garos and we will not allow any external force to dictate or question our way of life. Let us be clear that the GSU will not tolerate any attempt to disrespect or interfere with our cultural heritage,” it said, in a statement.
Highlighting the Garo culture, the union pointed out that the slaughtering of cows was a significant part of its rituals and traditions.
“We respect all faiths and beliefs including Hinduism, which has a rich tradition of tolerance and understanding. However, trying to impose restrictions on our food choices in the name of religion is not only divisive but also fundamentally contrary to the inclusive spirit of Hinduism itself,” the union stated adding, it would not stand by and watch anyone attempt to disrupt the harmony of the land.
