Local Trinamool leader held for murder
KOLKATA, Oct 9: Hemanta Pal, a local Trinamool Congress leader from Arambagh in Hooghly district of West Bengal, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly murdering a man late on Tuesday night. While Pal is the Trinamool Congress president of ward number four of Arambagh municipality, the deceased has been identified as Debasish Ash (32).It is learnt that on Tuesday night a quarrel broke out between Hemanta and Debasish Ash’s nephew Sayan, who protested against Pal misbehaving in the area in an inebriated state.Thereafter, Hemanta started beating up Sayan and at that point of time Debasish rushed to the spot to defend his nephew.Residents of the area told the police that Pal began assaulting Debasish with an iron rod and finally left him bleeding, leading to his death on the spot.Following the murder, tension broke out in the area as the locals started protesting over the barbaric act. Teenager gang-raped in Surat on Navratri night
SURAT, Oct 9: A teenager was allegedly raped by three persons when she was out with a friend during the ongoing Navratri festival in Gujarat’s Surat district, police said Wednesday.The 17-year-old was allegedly sexually assaulted in a deserted place on the outskirts in Mangrol taluka around 11 pm on Tuesday. The teen had gone to Kim to meet her friends after attending her coaching class. At around 10.30 pm, she had ice cream with her two friends. She and her (male) friend were then sitting in a deserted place on their way to a petrol pump along the highway near Mota Borsara village when three men approached them. the police said.The trio grabbed the girl while her friend escaped. They took turns to rape her before fleeing with her and her friend’s mobile phones.A motorcycle has been seized and two accused have been identified.After escaping from the spot, the girl’s friend informed locals who reached the area within half an hour and launched a search operation. In the meantime, the police were also alerted. (PTI)
Facebook helps cops trace woman presumed dead
GONDA, Oct 9: A 23-year-old married woman who had successfully led her parents to believe she was either dead or abducted for three years was tracked down in Lucknow through Facebook living with her lover, police said on Wednesday.The revelation came last week when police found a Facebook account, which the woman, Kavita, had created under a false name, becoming active.Kavita had married Vinay Kumar from Daduha Bazar on November 17, 2017.On May 5, 2021, she went missing.Her family accused her in-laws of murder, leading to the registration of a case against her in-laws. Despite extensive searches, Kavita’s whereabouts remained unknown.In December 2022, Vinay Kumar, the husband, filed a case against six people, including Kavita’s brother Akhilesh, alleging that they had kidnapped his wife. As her trail went cold, the high court demanded to know what had been doing, forcing them to revive their search. Police located Kavita at the house of her boyfriend, Satya Narayan Gupta, in the Daliganj area of Lucknow, police said. (PTI)
