Guwahati, Oct 14: A team from the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police on Monday intercepted a truck near North East Cancer Hospital at Jorabat during an early morning search operation on Monday and seized heroin worth over Rs 4 crore, official sources said.
One person has been apprehended in connection with the illegal transport of contraband substances.
Prior to the seizure, the STF team was informed that narcotics would be transported from Nagaland to Guwahati by a truck bearing registration number, AS-01-RC-2336.
Accordingly, the truck was intercepted in the area under the jurisdiction of Basistha police station.
“The truck was searched and 45 soap boxes containing heroin weighing 537.2 grams without cover were found. The drugs supplier cum driver of the said vehicle has been apprehended. Necessary formalities are being done,” a statement from the CPRO, Assam Police said.
The apprehended person has been identified as Rananjay Mandal (46), a resident of Bamunkuchi village in Barpeta district. He was currently residing at Bengali-Basti under Basistha police station in Kamrup (Metro) district.
Taking to social media, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the Assam Police for the successful operation.
