Jowai celebrates Int’l Day of Older Persons

JOWAI, Oct 15: The District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) of Jowai organised a special programme to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons at the Sohphoh Village Community Hall in West Jaintia Hills on Monday. The event was chaired by the village Headman, Mutshwa Thabah, and brought together community members to honor the contributions of the elderly and promote awareness around their well-being.
The District Social Welfare Officer, Y Najiar, delivered a keynote speech focusing on the event’s theme, “Ageing with Dignity.” She highlighted the vital roles that older men and women play within their families and communities and underscored the importance of strengthening care and support systems for the elderly.
Chief guest Damechwa Dhar emphasised the significance of caring for the elderly, particularly regarding their health and overall well-being. He echoed the event’s theme, urging the community to ensure that older persons are treated with dignity and receive the necessary support to lead fulfilling lives.
Dr Y Sumer encouraged elderly attendees to make regular visits to their nearest health centers for check-ups, reminding them that “good health is wealth.” As part of the program, Dr Sumer and his team conducted medical examinations for the elderly present at the event.
To mark the occasion, the office of the District Social Welfare distributed gifts to all elderly participants.
