JOWAI, Oct 18: The environmental public hearing for Meghatop Cement Pvt Limited’s proposal to construct an integrated cement plant with a capacity of 3.3 MTPA Clinker, 2.8 MTPA Waste, and a 16 MW Cement plant was held smoothly on Friday at Wahiajer village, Elaka Narpuh, East Jaintia Hills, despite opposition from several groups.
The organisations such as the KSU Narpuh circle, FKJGP, HITO and JWC attempted to enter the venue but were met with restrictions, with only two representatives from each organisation allowed to attend the meeting.
The public hearing was conducted by Franky Laloo from Meghalaya Pollution Control Board along with member secretary Dr. GH Chyrmang and East Jaintia Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner G Warjri.
They were joined by district officials, the Doloi of Narpuh Elaka, local headmen, villagers and representatives from the company.
A total of 11 speakers, including Doloi Manbha Kyndoh, Ex-MDC Desus Pohshna, and several village authorities, voiced their support for the cement plant, citing potential benefits for the community. However, they also emphasised the importance of the company adhering to environmental regulations.
In contrast, the Jaintia Women Council (JWC) expressed frustration, stating, “We intended to voice our opposition at the hearing, but were prevented by village volunteers and police. A hearing that only accommodates supporters is unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, the KSU Narpuh circle raised concerns that such projects contribute to environmental degradation, harming local hills, valleys and water sources.
