SHILLONG, Oct 18: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Friday asserted that it has been playing a constructive role within the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, stating it has not hesitated to point out flaws where necessary.
Highlighting the party’s commitment to improving governance since joining the coalition in 2018, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, “We have been together since 2018. We have also contributed to the working and functioning of the government, whenever there are things which need to be addressed we never hesitate to point out the flaws.”
Mawthoh further stressed the UDP’s role in the era of coalition politics. “We are trying our best as partners in the coalition. So far, we have remained united, respecting the people’s mandate. Although we hoped to secure more seats, we will continue working towards increasing our presence in the coming years,” he said.
It is pertinent to note that Mawthoh’s statement comes amid the allegations of corruption, nepotism, and mismanagement within the MDA coalition. Meanwhile, UDP MDC and working president Titos Chyne reiterated the party’s role as a constructive opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Despite being in opposition, Chyne affirmed the party’s dedication to ensuring accountability.
He then noted the need for a meeting of the MDA coordination committee.
“Recently, there was an MDA meeting. These concerns are mainly for the MLAs, and as of now, no issues have been reported to the party. We trust everything is moving smoothly,” Chyne said.
