SHILLONG, Oct 19: In a remarkable display of academic excellence, 62 students from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) successfully cleared both the UGC and CSIR NET, and JRF examinations this year.
This latest achievement follows an earlier success where 386 USTM students passed the same prestigious national-level exams, strengthening the university’s standing as a leading institution for competitive exam preparation.
Reflecting on the feats, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque emphasised USTM’s continued commitment to expanding its coaching programmes.
He reiterated the university’s mission to guide students through competitive exams while shaping them into future leaders in their respective fields.
Hoque also reaffirmed the university’s dedication to making higher education accessible  to all, stressing that financial constraints should never limit academic potential.
Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Prof. GD Sharma applauded the students’ success, attributing it to USTM’s comprehensive support system.
He noted that beyond academic coaching, the university offers soft skills training, interview preparation and motivational sessions, ensuring that students are fully prepared for academic and professional challenges.
Sharma also highlighted the university’s free coaching programmes as a key factor in USTM’s continued academic excellence, particularly in national competitive exams like the UGC and CSIR NET & JRF.
Dr. Trishna Thakuria, Director, University NET Forum, on the other hand, informed that Rs 1.3 crore has been returned to former students as an incentive of university best practices under the Payback Policy to NET achievers.
“To encourage the students to qualify NET, GATE, SLET, IAS, or any other top-level competitive examinations conducted by state and central governments, USTM has introduced the Pay Back Policy wherein students of the University who qualify for these prestigious examinations shall get back their fees,” she added.
