Driven by superstition, man ‘sacrifices’ grandmother
DURG (CHHATTISGARH), Oct 20: In a suspected case of ‘human sacrifice’, a man allegedly killed his grandmother and offered her blood on a ‘shivling’ before he tried to end his life in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, police said on Sunday. The incident, which appears to be the outcome of superstition, took place on Saturday evening, Sub Divisional Officer of Police, Dhamdha area, Sanjay Pundhir said. After being alerted about the incident by locals, a police team reached the spot and sent the body of the woman, identified as Rukmani Goswami (70), for postmortem. The accused, Gulshan Goswami (30), was admitted to a hospital in a critical condition, the official said. As per preliminary information, Gulshan lived with his grandmother in a room close to a Lord Shiva temple and used to daily perform rituals at the temple, he said. On Saturday evening, he allegedly killed his grandmother with a trident in their house and offered her blood on the ‘shivling’ at the temple, the official said. The man then returned home and attacked himself with the same trident on his neck, inflicting serious injuries, he said. (PTI)

Woman attacked over ‘affair’; hair chopped off
TAPI(GUJARAT), Oct 20: A woman taluka panchayat member was thrashed and her hair chopped off by a group of people over an alleged affair in Gujarat’s Tapi district following which police arrested one person, an official said on Sunday. Urmila Gamit of Songadh taluka panchayat was attacked by a woman and three men and beaten with a hockey stick on Saturday evening. The assaulters also cut her hair, said the official from Songadh police station. The woman was targeted in a public place when she was going home on a two-wheeler with her daughter, the police official said. One of the attackers, identified as Sobhna Gamit, accused Urmila of having illicit relations with her husband. The attackers also snatched her gold pendant and fled, the police said. (PTI)

12 of family die in Rajasthan road mishap
JAIPUR, Oct 20: Eight children among 12 people of a family died in a collision between a bus and tempo in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, police said. Bari SHO Shivlahari Meena said the accident took place on Saturday night when a speedy sleeper coach bus going towards Jaipur from Gwalior hit the tempo near Sumipur. The victims, residents of Kareem Gumvat colony, belonged to the same family and were returning from a wedding function in Barauli village. One person got injured in the accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each of the deceased. Man killed for denying money to buy alcohol
Latur (Maharashtra), Oct 20: A construction workers was beaten to death for refusing to give Rs 500 to a man and his two sons to buy alcohol in Latur, a police official said on Sunday. Vazaar Ayub Shaikh was assaulted by Sajid, Aslam, and Avez Gadeswar near a lake at Azad Chowk on Friday, the Ausa police station official said. The accused were arrested on Saturday and further probe is underway, he added. (PTI)
