SHILLONG, Oct 21: Meghalaya is set to benefit from the addition of 441 new post offices under a nationwide expansion initiative by the Centre, ensuring that every area within a five-km radius has access to postal services. Chief Post Master General (CPMG) of the North Eastern Circle, Sanjiv Ranjan, confirmed the development while speaking to The Shillong Times.
Highlighting the importance of this expansion, Ranjan stated, “Meghalaya has received 441 new post offices, while the entire Northeast, excluding Assam, has more than 1,500 new post offices. Arunachal Pradesh alone has reopened almost 1,500 post offices. The government’s scheme ensures that there is a post office within a five-km radius of any location, and we are on track to meet this target.”
Adding to this, he also provided insights into the current postal infrastructure in Meghalaya. As of March 31, 2024, there are 1,030 letter boxes across the state, with 82 in urban areas and 948 in rural regions. Meghalaya’s 940 post offices serve an average population of 3,156 people and cover an area of 24.17 sq km each.
About the absence of a post office in Laban, Shillong, despite the area having an assigned postal index number, Ranjan said, “We have not been able to secure an accommodation to set up the post office there, but we are actively searching and will establish one as soon as the issue is resolved,” he said.
This expansion is part of broader efforts to modernise and strengthen postal services in the region, with the introduction of drone technology also playing a key role.
Ranjan shared that a recent trial of drone deliveries in Arunachal Pradesh aims to improve mail delivery in difficult-to-reach areas. “On the 20th of this month, we conducted a trial where mailbags were transported via drone to two branch post offices in rural areas. If successful, this will be a game-changer for the Northeastern region, especially in areas with tough terrain,” he added.
In addition to these innovations, Dak Chaupal workshops are being organised to raise awareness about the wide range of services offered by post offices, including financial inclusion and insurance schemes.
“Our representatives visit rural areas to organise workshops, making citizens aware of banking services, Aadhaar enrolment, and other essential facilities,” said Ranjan.
The CPMG also emphasised the importance of adapting to the digital world. “All post offices across India, nearly 1.5 lakh of them, are now digitally connected. We’ve adopted core banking solutions, allowing transactions from any post office regardless of where your account is held,” Ranjan explained, stressing that these digital upgrades are essential to ensuring postal services remain relevant in today’s fast-paced world.
