SHILLONG, Oct 24: The Butcher Association of Meghalaya (BAM) on Thursday urged the district administration to take action against the increasing number of illegal cattle markets in East Khasi Hills.
In a letter to Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, BAM president Esron Marwein highlighted the rise of unregistered cattle markets in the district, which are not approved by the District Animal Market Monitoring Committee.
He alleged that these markets facilitate the illegal transportation of cattle to Bangladesh. According to Marwein, the markets are situated in areas such as Laitlyngkot and Mylliem, and they do not comply with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules, 2017, as per the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change notification.
“We would also like to inform you that these unregistered cattle markets have been set up solely for the benefit of people in Bangladesh, not for the consumers in our state,” Marwein stated.
He further alleged that cattle are being transported from Assam to these unregistered markets in East Khasi Hills without the required health certificates and transit permits.
