BAGHMARA, Oct 26: In a bid to address the alarming rise in drug-related issues, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Nongalbibra regional unit, alongside representatives from various NGOs, educational institutions, local churches, and Police and Health departments conglomerated for a meeting to strategise and launch a comprehensive drug awareness programme.
During the meeting, the gathering emphasised the shared responsibility of community members and institutions in eradicating the menace of drug abuse in South Garo Hills.
During the meeting, GSU Nongalbibra regional unit president, Krishan M Sangma, said, “The fight against drugs is not one that can be waged in isolation. It requires the unified efforts of all stakeholders—parents, educators, law enforcement, and health professionals—to foster a resilient society.”
His words resonated with attendees, who pledged their unwavering support towards making their communities drug-free.
Similarly, the Police department provided insights into the legal consequences of drug-related offences and recent trends in the district.
Calling for vigilance and community cooperation, a police official emphasised, “Law enforcement alone cannot solve this problem; we need an informed and proactive community.”
The Health department, on the other hand, spoke about the severe health risks associated with drug abuse and available rehabilitation services, underscoring the importance of early intervention and support.
Meanwhile, educational leaders accentuated the significance of integrating drug awareness programmes within school curricula, with the Adil Gandhian Society and other NGOs proposing outreach initiatives to safeguard the youths.
Faith leaders also imparted a message of resilience and recovery, highlighting the role of spirituality and community support in overcoming addiction.
During the meeting, a committee, led by GSU Nongalbibra unit president, was also formed to spearhead ongoing initiatives, including organising inter-school co-curricular activities, workshops and follow-up meetings.
