MAWKYRWAT, Oct 27: As the state government continues to turn a deaf ear to the persistent appeals for upgrade of Mawsynram block into a civil sub division, the KSU has decided to hold a signature campaign to push for the demand. The Khasi Students’ Union’s Balat Border Area Circle, Lawbah Border Area Circle and Sawsymper Circle units in collaboration with the KSU South West Khasi Hills District Unit will resume the agitation programme for this cause.
“…as the state government has not listened to our demand, we will conduct a signature campaign in all the areas under Mawsynram C&RD Block to demand that the government should upgrade Mawsynram into a Civil Sub-Division,” president of the KSU Balat Border Area Circle, Bonsen Snaitang, said.
Snaitang said that the signature campaign will start from November 1 at 4 pm in Lawbah, and continue on November 6 at Jyllep, November 11 at Dangar, and November 23 at Sawsymper. This campaign will also be held at Mawsynram but no date has been announced by the union as yet.
The KSU maintained that Mawsynram, being one of the oldest C&RD Blocks in the state, existing for more than 62 years, deserves to be upgraded into a Civil Sub Division. However, the KSU lamented that this issue has become a political tool taken advantage of by politicians and political parties, particularly during elections.
On this note, the KSU has urged the residents of Mawsynram area to support signature campaign.
