SHILLONG, Oct 31: The Village Defence Primary Committee of Nongstoin Area has sought the intervention of Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang to help reduce crimes and anti-social behaviour in Nongstoin area.
Informing that the committee has actively collaborated with the West Khasi Hills Police to apprehend criminals, committee president Makordor Kharsyiemlieh, in his letter to the DGP, said, “We have conducted joint patrols with the Police department in the Nongstoin market area, along the NH and in bypass areas where disturbances frequently occur. Despite our best efforts, certain crimes and disturbances continue to persist, creating challenges for the committee.”
Highlighting their difficulties, he noted that when the committee apprehends drug or liquor peddlers and hands them over to the police, members are often summoned as witnesses in related cases.
“This requirement is challenging as our members are volunteers who must also tend to their daily responsibilities to support their families. In this regard, we humbly request that VDPCNA members be exempted from witness duties and that the Police department take the necessary steps in this matter,” Kharsyiemlieh said.
Meanwhile, he noted that several village-level VDPC units have awaited registration since 2010, limiting their access to honorariums, tools and kits from the Police department.
Delays in honorarium processing are also a concern, which he attributed to a rigid renewal system.
“We kindly request your intervention to streamline the registration and renewal process for these committees to receive their intended benefits,” Kharsyiemlieh said.
He also reiterated the committee’s commitment to combating drug abuse, public drinking, street fighting and violent crime in Nongstoin.
“We propose regular night patrols along the main roads of Nongstoin town, the installation of CCTV cameras, and stricter enforcement against illegal alcohol sales,” he added.
