Shillong, Oct 31: Mawtari Myrdon edged closer to the knockout stage of the Meghalaya State League 2024, as a stellar performance by Silbestar Kharbani saw them beat 7 Wasa United 2-0 in a Group E clash at Wahiajer on Thursday.
The double strike in the second half ended any hopes of advancement for 7 Wasa, the inaugural MSL champions, who have struggled this season.
With this win, Mawtari Myrdon secured their second consecutive victory in the group stage, solidifying their place in the race for the top spot.
Mawtari had opened their campaign three days ago with an impressive 3-1 win over Seinbhalang Shkentalang, while 7 Wasa’s journey has been the opposite, beginning with a crushing 9-0 defeat to Shillong Lajong in the tournament’s curtain raiser.
Despite showing promise in the first half, 7 Wasa couldn’t hold off the determined Mawtari Myrdon attack. Kharbani opened the scoring in the 54th minute, finding the net after a well-coordinated team build-up.
His second goal in the 70th minute sealed the victory and underscored Mawtari Myrdon’s growing dominance in the group.
With back-to-back defeats, 7 Wasa now face an early exit, as they are mathematically out of contention for a spot in the quarterfinals, regardless of the outcome of their final group match.
The Meghalaya State League’s knockout stage format allows only the six group winners and the two best second-placed teams to proceed, making each group match a high-stakes affair.
The competition in Group E is now narrowed to Shillong Lajong and Mawtari Myrdon, both of whom have six points each, setting up an exciting race for the top two positions.
Lajong and Mawtari Myrdon are set to battle for supremacy in the group, and the results of their remaining matches will determine who takes the top spot.
With the tournament progressing rapidly, fans are looking forward to tomorrow’s fixtures, where teams from other groups will also continue their fight for a quarterfinal berth.
As the stakes rise, the Meghalaya State League 2024 continues to deliver captivating matches and surprising upsets, highlighting the competitive spirit of Meghalaya’s football clubs.
With teams like Mawtari Myrdon and Shillong Lajong emerging as strong contenders, the knockout rounds are sure to bring more thrills to fans across the state.
Friday’s matches, all scheduled for a 2 pm kick-off. As the Meghalaya State League 2024 intensifies, the race for the quarterfinals heats up, with teams vying to claim the top positions in their respective groups.
Mawtari Myrdon’s win over 7 Wasa United signals their intent and serves as a reminder of the fierce competition this tournament embodies.
With just a few group matches left, clubs are pulling out all the stops to secure a coveted spot in the knockout stage.
As fans eagerly await the next round of clashes, the excitement in the air is palpable, promising even more drama and unforgettable moments in the coming days.
For 7 Wasa United, the journey has been a tough one, underscoring how competitive this year’s Meghalaya State League has become. Once champions of the inaugural season, they now face the harsh reality of an early exit, a testament to the evolving dynamics of local football.
