Tura, Nov 4: The ACHIK from Garo Hills on Monday sought the immediate appointment of a Pro Vice Chancellor for NEHU, Tura Campus.

In its appeal to the NEHU Vice Chancellor in Shillong, the organization pointed out that the presence of the PVC at the campus, would provide localized leadership as well as ensure timely decision making with regard to the needs of the campus. It added students’ concerns, academic programmes and faculty requirements would be addressed more effectively in the presence of the official.

As per the organization, the presence of such an official would also strengthen community engagement as well as ensure efficient campus development.

GSU backs demand for PVC appointment

Meanwhile, the GSU led by Tengsak along with the GSU, NEHU Cell has also drafted a letter to the NEHU Vice Chancellor in Shillong extending support to the demand for the immediate appointment of the Pro Vice Chancellor for tura Campus.

“NEHU since 24-09-2021 has been functioning without proper Pro-VC which limits the powers and functions of the campus. There are a number of well qualified and experienced professors from the campus and there should be no issue in appointing the proper Pro Vice Chancellor to oversee the campus,” it said in the letter.

“NEHU, has an intermittent problem of appointing full-fledged PVC to NEHU, Tura Campus from 24th Sept’15 till 3rd Oct’16 there was no PVC. From 24th Sept’21 to 20th Jul’22 NEHU, Tura Campus did not have a full-fledged PVC but an “In charge”. NEHU has been delegating “Campus In-charge of NEHU, Tura Campus” given charge to Prof. Sujata Gurudev on 20th Jul ’22 till 5th Sept’23 and the same incumbent was designated “Campus Director” on 6th  Sept 23. This points out the problem and it is no mere accusation that NEHU, Tura Campus has no full-fledged PVC at present. The GSU is at a quandary to understand whether such designation as “Campus Director” exists in NEHU or why this gameplay of words are necessary,” it added, while stating that the situation was not so in Shillong.

The union also raised the issue of the disbandment of the PGSU questioning whether those in authority in Tura had the power to do so. According to it, there is no article in the Lyngdoh Commission/Committee that recommended the dissolution or disbandment of the PGSU and the same was unconstitutional.

The union, in its letter, demanded the post of the PVC be brought back and a qualified official be appointed to it immediately and that PGSU elections be conducted to enable students to voice their grievances through their representatives. The union also warned of pursuing other steps in the interest of the students if nothing is done to resolve the prevailing situation.
