University joins hands with Avenues to impart confidence, communication skills in students

SHILLONG, Nov 8: In a bid to enhance students’ personal and professional development so as to help them successfully navigate future careers, the MIT University of Meghalaya, in collaboration with Avenues, equipped the university students with essential confidence-building and communication skills.
The training programme, which was targeted at the students of the university’s School of Design, culminated on Thursday with a certification event held at the university premises.
According to a statement here, the certification event was attended by the university pro-vice chancellor Dr. D Bhattacharya, Avenues CEO Mark Laitflang Stone, among others.
“The programme titled ‘Articulating for Impact’ is an Avenues initiative to weave employability and life skills into campus interventions for students across the region. The training programme at MIT Meghalaya was led by DaphishishaKharhujon, Head – Partnerships and Jasmine Laitphlang, Head – Academics for Avenues,” the statement said, adding, “The sessions were conducted through a series of intensive training interventions since September 2024.”
During Thursday’s programme, university pro-vice chancellor spoke about the relevance of the programme for the university students. “These sessions will go a long way into preparing our students to take and present their knowledge as professionals in the world of work,” Dr. Bhattacharya said.
Meanwhile, Samshngain Shullai, a student, spoke of his experience from the programme. “I felt connected to this programme from the very first session. From building my confidence to helping me bring out my personal strengths, I have benefitted a lot. I have improved the way I deliver my presentations in class and I have also learned how to interact better with people which is so important for my chosen field of work in design,” he said.
Similarly, Arnon Rai also said how the programme helped him in developing confidence to speak in public.
“This programme is really important for students like us and for those who lack confidence in themselves. I want to thank Avenues for helping me through my journey for the past few months, from what I was to what I am today. I feel more comfortable to share my personal journey and I am more confident of speaking in public,” Raialso said.
Meanwhile, Daphishisha Kharhujon shared insights from her journey of leading the students through some of the sessions.
“From self-doubt and hesitation, each of you has come a long way to becoming improved versions of yourselves over the duration of this programme. And improvement is a matter of those small steps that you are willing to take with the understanding of what it takes to move forward,” she said.
