SHILLONG, Nov 11: In a significant claim, the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association or NEHUTA on Monday claimed that there are possibilities that the vandalism in the official quarter of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla was stage managed.
Wondering how the Vice Chancellor managed to exit the university premises when it was under lockdown due to the agitation, NEHUTA president Lakhon Kma said there is a possibility that the VC had a hand in the act of vandalism.
“Maybe, the people who helped the VC to come out of the university are involved in this act. We need to properly investigate this since we need to know who is responsible,” Kma said.
NEHUTA urged the state government to institute a probe to find out those responsible for the act of vandalism.
Kma said they suspect that the incident was an attempt to dilute the students’ hunger strike. He alleged that there are forces trying to take advantage of the situation.
“We need to know who committed this act since the incident has defamed the image of the university,” Kma said.
He claimed that the students have no hand in the incident, stating that if they had any plan to commit such an act, they could have done it when the VC was attending his office. “We are sure that our students are innocent,” Kma said.
Meanwhile, sources from the NEHU administration have confirmed that the VC called a few officials on Monday informing that he was fine and currently housed in a “safe” location.
According to the sources, the VC did not reveal his current location. “From what we know the VC is still in Shillong,” the sources said.
Police are yet to make any breakthrough into the act of vandalism at the VC’s official quarter in the wee hours of Sunday.
A senior police official on Monday said they are still investigating into the matter.
He further informed that additional forces have been deployed in and around the NEHU campus to prevent any untoward incident.
It may be mentioned that police have registered a case after NEHU Acting Registrar B Rynjah filed an FIR at Mawlai police station in this connection.
