SHILLONG, Nov 18: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday handed over a cheque of Rs 6.07 lakh to Dr HH Mohrmen, secretary of the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE), at the Chief Minister’s Office here. The funds, drawn from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund 2024-25 (NGO Category), are designated for purchasing a vehicle for the Halfway Home in Jowai, located at Sabahmuswang, West Jaintia Hills.
The Halfway Home, managed by SURE, serves as a rehabilitation facility for individuals recovering from mental illness who no longer require hospitalisation but remain homeless or unaccepted by their families. The facility, inaugurated on June 28, 2023, plays a critical role in reintegration and rehabilitation efforts.
Notably, the Jowai Halfway Home has successfully reunited two of its residents with their families, a milestone that sets it apart as the only one among the four such homes in Meghalaya, sponsored by the Directorate of Social Welfare, to achieve this feat.
Representing the Halfway Home at the event were Project Coordinator Niwanka Shylla and Social Worker Ilasiewdor Gashnga. The Block Development Officer of Thadlaskein, Dr H Niang, was also in attendance.
Commending the team, the Chief Minister congratulated the staff and expressed gratitude to SURE for their invaluable service to the state, wishing them continued success in their endeavours.
On the occasion, SURE also presented the CM with ‘Bam Tynre’, a cookbook featuring recipes of traditional indigenous dishes prepared by the organisation.
