SHILLONG, Nov 18: Cabinet Minister and BJP leader AL Hek on Monday dismissed allegations that the RSS and BJP were responsible for the ongoing turmoil in NEHU. He said the matter is under investigation and a conclusion cannot be determined by the statement of one individual.
Recently, the Congress had criticised the RSS and BJP over the ongoing crisis in NEHU, claiming that the turmoil began when the BJP attempted to “capture” the institute to promote their ideology by appointing individuals with RSS and BJP affiliations.
Hek said a fact-finding team of the central government will inquire into everything.
Stating that the central government will take a decision on the matter only after getting inputs and reports from various sources, Hek admitted that the situation in NEHU is getting from bad to worse.
Earlier on Monday, a BJP delegation visited the university and held discussions with the teachers and students.
The KSU on Monday slammed Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for merely expressing his concern over the indefinite hunger strike of the students and sending a letter to the Ministry of Education urging them to resolve the crisis.
“As the head of the state, the CM should have been actively addressing the concerns of the students. We expect the CM to lead a delegation to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister or even the President of India to fulfil the demands of the agitating students,” KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah told reporters, adding that there was a lack of seriousness on the part of the CM to address the concerns of the students.
Thabah lauded the Mawlai Town Dorbar (MTD) for taking a firm decision that they would not allow Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla to enter the university campus which falls under their jurisdiction.
“We expect the state government to take such drastic steps. But sadly it is the MTD which has to step in due to the failure of the government,” Thabah added.
The KSU general secretary said NEHUSU, KSU NEHU unit and even NESO had written to the Ministry of Education to address the concerns of the students.
“So far we have not received any kind of response. It clearly shows that the Centre is not concerned about the lives of tribal students,” Thabah said.
Meanwhile, leader of the Maitshaphrang Movement, Michael Syiem on Monday urged the central government to fulfil the genuine demands of the agitating NEHU students for removal of the VC.
Syiem, who met the agitating students, said the students are not terrorists or militants as they are only concerned about their academics.
The students should not be made to suffer, he added.
