Govt to roll out QR tracking for liquor bottles in a few months

SHILLONG, Nov 20: The Meghalaya government is looking to roll out a QR code-based tracking system for every bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in the state within the next few months.
Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Wednesday stated that the initiative would greatly enhance tracking and transparency in the system. “Everything will be at our fingertips. We will have a dashboard, and this will also prevent leakages,” he said.
A few months ago, the State Cabinet approved the Excise department’s proposal to implement the QR code-based tracking system for IMFL bottles, aiming to streamline operations and improve accountability.
In addition, the minister shared the government’s vision to make Meghalaya a leading state in fruit wine production. He noted that farmers used to face significant wastage of nearly half their produce as fruits often did not make it to the market. However, since the legalisation of fruit wine production, farmers are benefiting by processing their surplus fruits into wine.
“The state government will not only promote local fruit wine within the country but also explore opportunities to market it globally,” Shylla added.
