SHILLONG, Nov 24: The 11th International Sustainability Conference (SUSCON-XI), organised by IIM Shillong on the theme ‘Climate Positive World’, concluded successfully, attracting participants from India, Hungary, USA and Finland.
According to a statement here, the conference saw an impressive 301 submissions, of which 118 papers were meticulously selected through a rigorous review process.
“The high-quality research presented this year underscores the growing global interest and importance of sustainability across academia, industry, and civil society,” the statement said.
The event was supported by GAIL India Ltd and Numaligarh Refinery Ltd as industry sponsors, with the IIMS Journal of Management Science serving as the publication partner.
On the other hand, the Corporate Environmental Management (CEM) Research Group from the University of Jyväskylä’s JSBE, Finland, participated as the knowledge partner, lending international expertise.
Dean of Research at IIM Shillong, Prof. Basav Roychoudhury, inaugurated the conference by welcoming participants and dignitaries.
Similarly, the chief guest on the occasion, Padma Shri Shyam Sundar Paliwal, delivered a thought-provoking address, emphasising the role of self-reliance and sustainability in rural communities.
He shared his transformative work in Piplantri, where 111 trees are planted for every girl born, symbolising growth, empowerment and environmental stewardship.
“His work not only addresses environmental conservation but also promotes girl-child education, reduces dowry practices, and fosters community resilience,” the statement said.
Chief Sustainability Officer at JSW Group Prabodha Acharya, who was the guest of honour, delivered a keynote address focusing on three key sustainability mega-trends, viz. nature, inequality and diversity.
Drawing on his extensive corporate experience, Acharya stressed the urgency for businesses to adopt sustainable practices and manage their societal and environmental impacts.
He urged students and young leaders present to actively contribute to tackling these challenges through their careers and leadership roles.
