JOWAI/SHILLONG, Nov 25: As part of the observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a five-day self-defence training programme for girls got under way during a programme at Iungwalieh Dorbar Hall, Dulong, Jowai.
On the occasion, an awareness campaign on eliminating gender-based violence was also held.
Jointly organised by the District Hub for Women Empowerment and the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with Jowai Police and the West Jaintia Hills Taekwondo Association, the self-defence training is aimed at boosting the confidence of girls and ensuring their safety.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Assistant Commissioner, Jowai, GH Passah highlighted that gender-based violence is a societal issue affecting everyone.
He emphasised the need to break the silence and provide support for survivors and called for collective action to address and eliminate gender-based violence.
On the occasion, government officials spoke on the initiatives of Mission Shakti, and raised awareness on cybercrime and online safety as well as on POCSO Act’s role in protecting children from sexual abuse.
Observance at Ramkheng village
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was also observed at Ramkheng village under Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills.
Organised by the District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, Shillong, the programme was attended by villagers from Laitmawroh and Ramkheng villages.
During the programme, Legal Aid Counsel, Shillong, P. Riahtam, spoke on the topic ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005’ and ‘Order for Maintenance of Wives, Children and Parents under Section 144 BNSS’, while Sohra Police Station Sub-Inspector A. Khongsit spoke on the topic ‘Cyber Violence against Women and Girls’.
The programme then was followed by an interactive session.
