SHILLONG, Nov 26: Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister, Comingone Ymbon, on Tuesday called on Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, in the national capital to hold discussions on initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and improving service delivery in Meghalaya.
During the meeting, Ymbon highlighted Meghalaya’s efforts to ensure equitable distribution of foodgrains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), despite the state’s challenging terrain and dispersed population.
He said the Meghalaya government is committed to addressing gaps in coverage, strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms and ensuring the benefits of the NFSA reach the most vulnerable households.
Ymbon also showcased Meghalaya’s adoption of technology-driven solutions to enhance the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS).
He elaborated on the implementation of route optimisation techniques to streamline foodgrain transportation, reduce logistical costs and ensure timely delivery across the state.
During the meeting, Ymbon also informed the union minister about Meghalaya’s collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP).
This partnership, Ymbon said, focuses on modernising the PDS, reducing food wastage and improving nutritional outcomes for the state’s most at-risk populations.
Meanwhile, the union minister praised Meghalaya’s proactive approach to tackling its unique challenges and commended the state government for embracing innovative and technology-based solutions.
He also assured the Centre’s continued support in bolstering food security and enhancing citizen welfare in Meghalaya.
It may be mentioned that the meeting also explored avenues for deeper collaboration between the Centre and the state to advance the objectives of the NFSA, with a focus on improving the delivery of essential commodities and achieving sustainable development goals.
