New Delhi, Dec 4: The road to the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s next June is heating up, with five nations still vying for a spot in cricket’s ultimate Test showdown. Reigning champions Australia, alongside India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, remain in the hunt, while the rest of the pack has fallen out of contention. With 11 crucial Tests across five series still to be played, the battle for the top two spots is set to go down to the wire.
India Back in Contention After Perth Triumph
India’s hopes of making the WTC final appeared in jeopardy following a shocking home defeat to New Zealand earlier in the cycle. However, a commanding victory against Australia in Perth has reinvigorated their campaign, propelling them to the top of the WTC standings. For India, a dominant performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy could seal their place in the final. Winning four or five Tests outright would guarantee their spot, but even three wins could suffice in certain scenarios. A clean 2-0 sweep against Australia would be particularly valuable, as it would deny their rivals crucial points. While India could technically still qualify with a drawn series (1-1 or 2-2) or even a 2-3 loss, their fate in such cases would hinge on results from other matches.
South Africa’s Home Advantage
South Africa has emerged as a strong contender, rising from fifth to second in the standings following a decisive win over Sri Lanka in their first Test. The Proteas have the advantage of playing all their remaining matches at home, where conditions are likely to suit their strengths.
Victory in their second Test against Sri Lanka would put South Africa in an enviable position, as they would then only need one win in their subsequent two-Test series against Pakistan to reach the final. A clean sweep of their remaining fixtures would confirm their maiden appearance in the WTC decider.
Australia’s Calculations Simplified
Australia’s path to the final remains largely unchanged, with five wins out of their seven remaining matches still the golden formula. However, the results of other series have played into their hands. Losses for New Zealand against England and Sri Lanka against South Africa have eased Australia’s path, meaning that even four wins out of six could secure their spot unless Sri Lanka stages a dramatic upset in the second Test against South Africa.
Should Australia fall short with only three wins, their qualification would depend on a complex series of results involving other teams. However, their fate remains firmly in their hands for now.
Sri Lanka’s Narrow Window
Sri Lanka’s crushing defeat to South Africa in the first Test dealt a blow to their chances but hasn’t entirely extinguished their hopes. A strong performance in the second Test, followed by a clean sweep of their home series against Australia, could still see them through.
Even in the unlikely scenario of losing 2-0 to South Africa, Sri Lanka could sneak into the final with a percentage of 53.85, provided other results fall in their favor. Their campaign now hangs on securing key victories against high-quality opposition.
New Zealand’s Hopes Slim but Alive
New Zealand’s dramatic 3-0 victory over India away from home brought them back into contention, but a crushing loss to England in their own backyard has dimmed their prospects. The Kiwis now find themselves relying on a series of unlikely outcomes to keep their hopes alive.
A 2-1 win in their remaining matches could theoretically work for New Zealand, but their fate hinges on Australia, India, and South Africa dropping points. Additionally, a slow over-rate penalty in their first Test against England cost them three points, further complicating their path to qualification.
The Technically Alive and Eliminated
Pakistan remains technically alive in the competition, with a maximum percentage of 52.38 possible if they win all four of their remaining matches. However, their inconsistent form makes this a steep climb.Meanwhile, England, West Indies, and Bangladesh have been officially eliminated. England’s hopes were dashed by a three-point slow-over penalty against New Zealand, leaving them unable to leapfrog the current top contenders. West Indies and Bangladesh, despite memorable wins over Australia and Pakistan respectively earlier in the cycle, have also fallen short.
The Final Stretch
With the stakes higher than ever, the final stretch of the WTC cycle promises intense action as teams vie for the two coveted spots at Lord’s. While India and South Africa currently lead the pack, Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand remain in contention, keeping the race alive until the very end. The next few months of Test cricket will determine who earns the honour of battling for the WTC mace on the grandest stage of all. (Agencies)
