SHILLONG, Dec 5: Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday stated that there are approximately 600-700 registered hawkers in Shillong, as per official records, and emphasised the need for regular surveys to maintain accuracy.
This figure contrasts sharply with the claim by the Meghalaya Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA), which asserts that 5,000 hawkers and street vendors are registered under its association. “No, there are 600-700 registered hawkers as per office records.
There might be slightly more than the registered number, but we need to conduct regular surveys to confirm,” Dhar said.
When asked about his recent meeting with the hawkers, Dhar said, “The hawkers met me and requested better spaces to operate from. I assured them that they should not worry and should cooperate with us. We will identify suitable locations and provide them with good spaces.”
He added, “They are happy. They are our brothers and sisters, and we need to think carefully. We cannot just evict them abruptly.”
Dhar further added that a joint meeting between the state government and hawkers will decide their relocation.
When asked how long the process would take, he said, “We are currently trying to identify new spaces for them. Once a suitable location is finalised, we will proceed.”
On whether the government could accommodate all the hawkers given their large numbers, Dhar clarified, “That is why we will prioritize those who are officially registered first.”
He also stressed that while the government is not taking a lenient stance, it believes hawking should be regulated to maintain order.
On the issue of haphazard cab parking at Khyndai Lad junction, Dhar acknowledged that the problem would persist until offices are shifted to the New Shillong Township. However, he noted that the construction of several new parking lots is under way to ease congestion.
