SHILLONG, Dec 18: Sharing warmth and joy ahead of Christmas and New Year, South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai provided financial assistance and food items to as many as 150 families burdened by hardships, giving them the opportunity to celebrate with happiness and festivity.
A sea of red Christmas hats atop cheerful faces surrounded the residence of the MLA as people eagerly awaited their turn to receive gifts.
“This is a huge help during festivity. Who thinks about us? Very few. God bless him!,” said a young girl, requesting anonymity.
She mentioned that this initiative is an annual occurrence, and they eagerly look forward to it each year.
Another woman, in her late fifties, shared, “We are fortunate that he is doing good to us. He never forgets us. I am happy and I wish him well.”
A long queue stretched towards the distribution area, with people patiently waiting for their turn. Prayers were offered, and hugs and words of gratitude were exchanged as the beneficiaries thanked the MLA for his generosity.
“I was told by a small boy that he does not have cake and will come to my house to eat. I was moved by this and I decided to give them Rs 2,000 per family to buy cake, plus enough ration to see them through this festive week,” said Shullai, who was also seen wearing a red Christmas hat.
He explained that the initiative was carried out under a discretionary grant of Rs 7 lakh, aimed at supporting families with limited means during the festive season.
Stating that such outreach is not limited to Christmas, Shullai said he also extends help to marginalised families during Durga Puja.
It may be mentioned that the Rangbah Shnongs of various localities were tasked with identifying and listing the names of families facing difficult circumstances.
