M’laya’s 15-yr-old braveheart wins Rashtriya Bal Puraskar

SHILLONG, Dec 26: Meghalaya’s 15-year-old braveheart Kisen Wanniang was presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in New Delhi on Thursday.
President Droupadi Murmu conferred award on Kisen and 16 other children in seven categories, for their exceptional achievements at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.
Kisen, who hails from Mawlangwir village in South West Khasi Hills, displayed extraordinary bravery by rescuing four children, aged between 9 and 12 years, from the Maweitksar river during heavy rains.
The son of a single mother who works as a domestic labourer, Kisen was washing clothes by the river when he heard the children’s cries for help.
Without hesitation and disregarding his own safety, he plunged into the river and courageously saved the four children from drowning.
