SHILLONG, Dec 28: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is relying on its strong grassroots network and collective leadership to deliver a strong performance in the upcoming Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council elections.
“UDP has very strong grassroots support. The party has been in existence for a long time. In addition, we already have 12 MLAs and about 12-13 MDCs in place. With effective coordination at the district and constituency levels, I am confident we will perform well,” said UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Saturday.
He added, “Unlike MP elections, MDC elections are more localized and heavily depend on the leaders and their connections at the constituency and grassroots levels. The UDP is banking on its grassroots support to succeed.”
Mawthoh expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, stating, “We have a much better chance in this MDC election. The sustained efforts we’ve made to consolidate the party at the grassroots level and the team culture we have cultivated will yield positive results.”
When asked about competition from other political parties, Mawthoh said, “We cannot speak for other parties, but the UDP has consistently worked to strengthen its base since its inception in 1997. It is a party with a strong grassroots connection.”
He emphasised that the party has always addressed the concerns and aspirations of the people and remains committed to continuing this approach.
The General Secretary also highlighted the party’s efforts to keep its members informed about state issues and the councils’ role in safeguarding public interests. “The UDP has conducted several meetings with MLAs, MDCs, and party leaders. During the recent general council meeting, we presented a detailed account of the UDP’s role in KHADC and JHADC,” he said.
Mawthoh further revealed that the party is preparing a list of long-pending issues to present to the public. “We will continue to address these issues and ensure they remain a priority for the party,” he concluded.
It may be noted that the KHADC and JHADC elections have been scheduled for February 21, 2025.The counting of votes will be held on February 24.
