Songkristan competition promotes Garo culture along Assam-Meghalaya border

SHILLONG, Jan 3: The 8th edition of the Songkristan Competition, held at Umshek Village playground along the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Khasi Hills district on Thursday, dazzled the audience with the rich display of Garo culture.
Organised by the Gijang Area A-Chik Cultural Arts and Sports Association, the event commenced with a traditional Wangala Dance performed by local youths.
The day-long event was attended by Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA, Remington G. Momin, as the chief guest, alongside A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) president of the Aradonga Regional Unit, Spren G. Momin; general secretary Jenggrim A. Marak; and FKJGP president of the Aradonga Regional Unit, Trellingstar Shira.
Representatives from Kamrup district’s Garo Students’ Union, alongside hundreds of Garo villagers from both Meghalaya and Assam, also participated in the event.
In his address, Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA highlighted the significance of the Songkristan programme in promoting peace, unity and prosperity among the Garo community.
“Songkristan is an important cultural programme that unites the Garo people and serves the community. This annual celebration coincides with New Year festivities,” Momin said.
This year, ten cultural groups from villages including Maspara, Malapara, Khasi Salbari, Malsapara, Athiabari, Ranikhat, Dogaon-Malang, Umshek, Madankillor and Rongdhali participated in the competition.
Ranikhat emerged as the winner, receiving Rs 30,000. Similarly, Maspara and Dogaon secured the second and third positions, receiving Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Continuing his address, Momin stressed the importance of preserving Garo traditions such as Wangala Dance and Songkristan. He expressed hope that both the Assam and Meghalaya governments would support future Songkristan programmes.
Momin also urged communities in the region to live together in peace and harmony, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
