SHILLONG, Jan 7: Despite claims by Delhi Police, the state government on Tuesday said it does not have reports of any illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
Chief Secretary DP Wahlang said there were no reports of any problems along the state’s international border in the past two or three months.
Wahlang, however, said the government used to receive intelligence reports on events across the border likely to impact the state. Such information is shared with the BSF.
“We have not received any adverse reports at all from the border and we are hoping that it will continue,” he told reporters.
He said the BSF is keeping a strong vigil along the border with the help of the Meghalaya police.
On the recent sightings of a drone near the Sohra-Shella border, the chief secretary said they don’t have any specific information beyond the detection of the flying object
He said they have no information about why the drone was airborne close to Meghalaya’s border and what it was trying to capture and analyse.
“We have not received any inputs from the Centre so far. They may be analysing the information and share the information with us when there is clarity,” he said, adding that the drone was a one-off event.
On the illegal coal mining, Wahlang said there is no concrete evidence that coal is being mined right now.
“Whenever we get reports about illegal coal mining, we ask the deputy commissioners to find out and see what is happening,” he said.
Stating that 2024 was relatively a very peaceful year, he said the government did not face any major issues, and everything was under control.
“We hope that it will carry on to 2025. With a good law-and-order situation, a lot of activities can happen. The developmental agenda of the government can drive forward and eventually, the citizens only will benefit from all this,” Wahlang said.
