SHILLONG, Jan 13: The annual Nul-Ding Kût Festival (Festival of Renewal of Life) of the Biate community in Jaintia Hills was celebrated with traditional pomp at the Lamzol festival ground) in Kulpui village, East Jaintia Hills.
Organised by the Biate Cultural Organization of Meghalaya (BCOM), the festival witnessed the participation of thousands of Biates from across Jaintia Hills and neighbouring Assam.
The event commenced with Bible reading and prayer led by Rev. Joseph Nampui, Pastor-in-Charge of the Centenary District (Biateram Synod). During the inaugural session, the chief host urged everyone to forgive and forget past grievances, emphasising the need to look forward to a blessed and prosperous future.
Local MLA Santa Mary Shylla, was the chief guest of the occasion.
In her address, she encouraged the community to preserve this unique festival, uphold their age-old culture and traditions, and stand with pride on the global stage.
MDC of Saipung, Arbor Hima Darnei, and Member of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Assam, Lalremsiama Darnei, were present as guests of honour. Darnei urged the younger generation to stay focused on their goals, work diligently, and take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the rich Biate cultural heritage.
Following the conclusion of the first session, the second session featured vibrant performances by the youth. A highlight of the festival was the ‘Mr. and Miss Kût pageant’, which saw enthusiastic participation. Caleb Darnei of Thuruk Unit was crowned Mr. Kut 2025, while Miriami Ngamlai, also of Thuruk Unit, won the title of Miss Kut 2025.
