SHILLONG, Jan 15: The Meghalaya government has extended yet another invitation to the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to participate in the peace talks, despite previous efforts being derailed over demands by the outfit for a general amnesty to its leaders and cadres.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday reiterated the state government’s commitment to facilitating the dialogue process, emphasizing the need to address challenges and find a resolution within the constitutional framework.
“We are ready to facilitate the entire (peace) process and address any challenges that arise,” Sangma said, while urging the HNLC to engage in discussions.
Regarding the HNLC’s demand for general amnesty, the CM clarified that the decision lies with the central government and not the state. He assured that the government is open to considering amnesty on a case-by-case basis, especially for individuals not involved in heinous crimes.
“The best way to resolve this issue is through talks within the constitutional framework. Safe passage has been assured, and matters like amnesty can be discussed as part of the process,” Sangma stated.
The government’s renewed call comes with an emphasis on reconciliation and dialogue as the optimal path toward peace. While acknowledging the hurdles, the CM expressed optimism that the talks could pave the way for a lasting resolution to the long-standing conflict.
