SHILLONG, Jan 18: IIM Shillong hosted a roundtable discussion aimed at tackling the challenges and opportunities in waste management in the region.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Meghalaya Institute of Governance, Bethany Society, OCU and Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun, to explore sustainable solutions for Shillong.
IIM Shillong Director, Prof. DP Goyal, emphasised the need for collaboration between academic institutions, government bodies, and local communities to address the city’s waste management issues.
CAO, Col. Dinesh Adhikari, highlighted some of the best waste management practices adopted by the institution, including innovative measures to reduce waste and promote sustainability on campus.
The discussion focused on innovative approaches to Shillong’s growing waste management challenges, particularly those driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth. Participants explored ways to integrate waste management with community involvement and policy support.
Key topics discussed included waste segregation and public awareness, water ATMs for clean drinking water, community-driven waste management solutions, river stewardship and conservation, recycling, repurposing and commercialisation of waste, supportive government policies, pilot projects and data collection, and collaboration with NGOs and experts.
The roundtable concluded with a shared commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing Shillong’s waste management challenges.
