SHILLONG, Jan 27: Fantin J Lakadong, the sitting NPP MDC seeking re-election from Laitumkhrah-Malki constituency, became the first candidate to file his nomination for the upcoming KHADC elections scheduled for February 21.
Lakadong, accompanied by East Shillong MLA and Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, submitted his nomination papers at the ISBT, Mawlai Mawiong, on Monday, the first day of the filing process.
On the same day, two independent candidates, OS Jyrwa from Mawryngkneng constituency and Daniel Wahlang from Mawsynram constituency, also filed their nominations at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shillong.
A senior official confirmed that no nominations were filed for the JHADC elections on the first day.
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Lakadong expressed cautious optimism about his chances of re-election. “I am not overconfident, but I believe I have fulfilled my responsibilities as an MDC to the best of my ability. I have accomplished many things for the constituency and my people, and I trust my supporters to stand by me once again,” he said.
Lakadong dismissed concerns about anti-incumbency, asserting that the NPP-led Executive Committee in the KHADC had achieved significant milestones. He highlighted the collaboration with the District Council Affairs (DCA) department and the Governor’s Secretariat, which facilitated the passage of several pending council bills into law.
The NPP candidate expressed confidence in his party’s ability to form the next Executive Committee, crediting the hard work of the sitting MDCs and their dedication to the needs of the people.
If re-elected, Lakadong said he would advocate for making the Khasi language compulsory at the primary education level.
