SHILLONG, Jan 28: Drugs worth Rs 191.328 crore were destroyed in a secure and environmentally responsible manner by the Commissionerate of Customs, NER, Shillong, ensuring these harmful substances are permanently removed from circulation.
The destruction was part of a drug destruction drive and involved a total of 15.90 kg of heroin, 92.77 kg of methamphetamine tablets, 355.40 grams of cocaine, and 1,567.161 kg of ganja.
Customs has reaffirmed its commitment to combating cross-border crimes, including drug and narcotics smuggling, gold, cigarettes, wildlife articles, fake Indian currency notes, import-export frauds, and trade-based money laundering. The department works in close partnership with various law enforcement agencies to achieve this goal.
Highlighting the importance of public involvement, the Customs department said there is an attractive, income-tax-free reward scheme for those who provide actionable intelligence. Informants’ identities are kept strictly confidential.
Meanwhile, acting on a tip-off, Customs sleuths recently seized 12 kg of drugs valued at Rs 12 crore. The operation, conducted at Rangirkhari Point on the Sonai-Silchar Road in Assam, also led to the confiscation of vehicles and the arrest of two individuals.
