SHILLONG, Jan 29: Complaints of overcharging at several parking lots in the state capital have surfaced, with some attendants allegedly charging excessive fees, particularly from tourists.
A tourist reported being asked to pay Rs 50 for just one hour of parking at a lot in Shillong, adding that receipts are often not issued.
“As a tourist, I usually avoid confrontation even when overcharged, but the authorities should address this issue,” the complainant rued.
It has been observed that such problems are more common in smaller parking lots operating along roadsides rather than in major designated parking areas. Meanwhile, Shillong Municipal Board CEO, PK Boro, said he had not received any complaints regarding overcharging in these parking lots.
Denying allegations of overpricing, he clarified that attendants charge for a full hour even if a vehicle is removed just a few minutes past the hour.
He, however, assured that action would be taken if people filed official complaints.
It may be mentioned that the Shillong Municipal Board leases out these parking lots to different operators for a fixed period.
