SHILLONG, Feb 6: With physical work on the new Assembly Building at New Shillong Township surpassing 90% and previous safety concerns addressed, State Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma is confident that the next autumn session of the Assembly will be held there.
“I believe that if not the budget session, the next autumn session will definitely take place on the new Assembly premises. Physical work is over 90% complete. As we speak, the actual dome covering is being installed, and it will be completed in a few days before being handed over for interior work,” Sangma said.
Recalling the past incident of the dome collapse, he emphasised, “As Speaker and head of the Legislative Assembly, it is my duty to ensure the safety of every member. We previously faced an incident where the building’s safety was compromised. This time, we are not taking any chances — better late than never.”
Regarding safety assurances, he stated, “I am not a technical expert, but as a layman, I can say that the dome’s original weight of 3,000 tons has now been reduced to 300 metric tons. Efforts are being made to make it as light as possible without compromising the structural strength.”
He further informed that a safety audit is under way. “We have the Project Management Consultant (PMC) in place, along with our own technical adviser and the PWD team working alongside us. Technically, we have experienced professionals overseeing and monitoring the project,” he said.
When asked about action against the company for cost and time overruns, Sangma responded, “I am not in a position to comment on that, but action has been taken. The High-Powered Committee (HPC) will address the issue when it comes up.”
He added that the HPC will convene soon, either before or immediately after the upcoming session.
