SHILLONG, Feb 6: The under-construction MUDA Shopping Complex, also known as Ïew Laitumkhrah, which was destroyed in a fire in 2022, has achieved 60% work progress giving the vendors and shopkeepers the much-need jubilation as it nears completion.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who inspected the complex on Thursday, interacted with vendors and shopkeepers, who expressed their joy at seeing the market construction nearing culmination.
“The second phase of the project is scheduled for completion by March 2026. Currently, construction is 60% complete, and the market is expected to be one of the finest community markets in the city. It will accommodate around 500 vendors across various trades and will feature wet and dry merchandise, grocery stores, and multiple departmental facilities,” said Lyngdoh, who is also the local MLA.
She added that the market will include a self-contained food court with ample space for showcasing local and international cuisine, beverages, as well as art and musical performances.
Plans are also in place to incorporate modern facilities such as an abattoir and an incinerator to ensure hygiene and efficient waste management.
“The market will also have sufficient parking and designated sit-out areas for leisure. The project is being implemented in three phases until full completion,” she stated.
