RESUBELPARA, Feb 8: North Garo Hills (NGH) police on Friday apprehended a five-member gang involved in motorcycle theft and smuggling to Bangladesh following a tip-off from Assam Police.
The gang was reportedly stealing motorcycles from various locations in India and transporting them to Bangladesh.
The operation was initiated after NGH police received information about a stolen motorcycle case from Matia Police Station.
The suspects were believed to have entered Meghalaya, prompting a joint operation by Dainadubi Outpost OP and Assam Police.
The breakthrough came when the Wageasi OGC staff intercepted a Pulsar motorcycle (AS-18 K 3422) near Gairong. Upon further questioning, the police recovered another stolen motorcycle (AS-01 FF 1309) from Gairong Bazaar. “This swift action led to the detention of five individuals connected to the case. It has been revealed that the stolen motorcycles were planned to be transported to Rongara for delivery to Bangladesh,” NGH Superintendent of Police Swapnil Pawar said.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Rockystar M Sangma and Sanstar A Sangma, both residents of Baghmara, Dabigre; Fozirul Haque from Sidabari, Goalpara; Rofiqul Ali (also known as Nabar Ali) from Nayapara, Matia, Goalpara Police Station; and Rakibul Islam from Nagarbera, Paharpara, Kamrup, Assam.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to Matia Police Station, where the case has been registered.
“This successful operation underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies in combating vehicle theft and reinforcing safety within the community. We encourage the public to report any suspicious activities to further assist in maintaining public safety,” the SP said.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Saturday morning, West Garo Hills (WGH) Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) raided the residence of suspected drug-peddler Yampiberio K. Sangma from Darengre, PO Dobasipara, PS Tura, WGH, and seized 395 grams of cannabis from his possession.
