TURA, Feb 9: The Garo State Movement Committee (GSMC) along with the A’chik State People’s Front (ASPF) have moved Chief Minister Conrad Sangma seeking the setting up of the Winter Capital in Tura.
The demand for the setting up of the Winter Capital in Tura comes in the wake of a statement made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the recent Republic Day celebration, where he announced that Tezpur would be made the Raj Bhawan, while a Mini Secretariat and the Office of the Chief secretary would be set up at Silchar.
“This move aligns with the growing trend across India of states establishing separate locations for administrative and executive functions to enhance governance and accessibility. The GSMC and the ASPF, in light of this precedent, have called for Tura to be designated as the Winter Capital of Meghalaya,” the groups said in a joint memorandum .
The organisations pointed out that the establishment of Tura as the Winter Capital would not only address the long-standing demands of the A’chik community but also strengthen the administrative framework of the state.
“On behalf of The A’chik community, we believe that Tura, being the cultural and historical heart of the Garo Hills, is the ideal choice to be designated as the Winter Capital,” the organisations stated.
