Mawkyrwat, Feb 14: With only a few days left for the upcoming council elections, Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad Sangma on Thursday toured Mawkyrwat to campaign for party candidate Carnes Sohshang from the constituency.
Accompanied by party leaders, the chief minister visited villages in Mawkyrwat including Mawthawpdah, Rangblang, Umdohlun, Mawlangwir, Rangmaw and Sakwang villages where he met with the residents seeking their support for the party candidate and in the district council election slated for February 21.
Residents and groups submitted memorandums for developmental works in the constituency to the chief minister during his visit to the villages.
Speaking at many places, Sangma said that this election is very important for this constituency because this is an opportunity for the people to work directly with the government and with the chief minister.
“As a government, there are many programmes that we want to do, but without having representatives from my party and without having leaders through whom I can work, it is sometimes difficult for me to give the developments even though we want to give them and therefore this election is about the development of Mawkyrwat Constituency as a whole,” Sangma said at Mawlangwir village.
Sangma also lambasted some of the political parties that play negative politics, spread hatred by insulting the government and its ministers and also tried to divide
the society and the people for their political gains.
“Many political parties come and give all kinds of negative speeches and lectures where they will insult the government and the chief minister, and they will always try to divide the society and the people and they play that kind of negative politics which I don’t like and don’t appreciate. We are here to serve the people, bring development and make life better. We are not here to throw dirt and talk bad things about other parties because I don’t think that is healthy politics. We believe in positive politics and we will work together, but for that, I need your support and therefore I request all of you to support Carness in this upcoming MDC election,” he said.
At Sakwang village, the chief minister announced that the government had sanctioned Rs13.01 crore under the NESET scheme under the DoNNER Ministry for the development of the athletic tracks of international standards which were used in national games and Olympics at Sakwang village, and the tendering process will take place in few days.
“Hopefully this will be one of the good centres which we tried to bring some disciplines to South West Khasi Hills district so that our people here are involved in the national games. We are trying to build infrastructure for sports as much as possible and this is one step towards it and Sakwang village is one of the beneficiaries through this scheme”.
Sangma also promised that the government through the initiative of Carness Sohshang will extend financial assistance for the preparation of the Synod meeting of the KJP Synod Sepngi at Sakwang Presbyterian Church in March 2025 and at Rangmaw in 2028.
At Rangmaw village while appealing to the people to support, Sangma said that Sohshang, a person who has all the qualities that the leader has, has been working very hard to bring development to Mawkyrwat constituency, therefore the people of the constituency should not listen to the negative speeches, but to choose him to bring changes to Mawkyrwat constituency.
