SHILLONG, Feb 23: Former MLA and independent candidate from Umroi MDC constituency, George B Lyngdoh, is confident that the people will give him a chance to represent them in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
On the eve of counting day, Lyngdoh stated, “As aspirants and candidates, we have traveled across the constituency, meeting people and presenting our promises — our vision and road map for the future of Umroi.” “We have shared our perspectives and sought their support and mandate. Now, it is up to the people to decide, and hopefully, they will give me the opportunity to represent them in the district council,” he added.
When asked which party he would align with if the need arose, Lyngdoh responded, “As of now, we have not given it much thought. We will have to see the results, analyse the tallies, and consult with our group and supporters in the constituency. Based on their suggestions, we will make a decision accordingly.”
Lyngdoh decided to contest as an independent in the KHADC election after his expected support from the Umroi Constituency Progressive Forum (UCPF) did not materialise.
Many key members of the UCPF have chosen to back MD Syiem, who recently joined the Congress and was named its candidate for the Umroi seat. In an unexpected turn, Arbinus Lyngdoh, who felt sidelined by the Congress, has decided to support George Lyngdoh’s candidacy.
George Lyngdoh is backed by a group called the Umroi Democratic Front (UDF).
