SHILLONG, Feb 24: As part of its Annual Vocational Awards, the Rotary Club of Shillong honoured five entrepreneurs for their outstanding efforts and commitment to advancing their startups and ventures despite the difficulties encountered in the early days. The awardees were selected from among many distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective entrepreneurial fields. The tireless efforts and innovations, blended with culture, heritage, and environmental sustainability evident in their work, were a special feature of this year’s awardees.
One of the awardees, Nicholas Shangpliang, has utilised the local Sohiong fruit for wine fermentation. He has branded his product as ‘JONGHI,’ which he describes as a labuor of love born from his family’s shared interest and passion for winemaking. ‘JONGHI’ has succeeded in introducing its product to wine enthusiasts, offering a sense of serenity, comfort, and delight, while also providing employment and livelihood opportunities.
The second awardee, Banlam Warjri, was recognised for his exemplary bakery products. The brand ‘Daphi’s Bakery’ is one that he and his family have created, specialising in ‘Butter Shorts’ (shortbread cookies) and ‘Multi-Grain Loaf’ — an artisanal whole wheat bread made with six different grains and seeds, with no added sugar or fat. This unique product line has significantly contributed to meeting the changing dietary habits of many, while also providing custom-made products for bread and cookie lovers and generating livelihoods through his venture.
The third awardee, Thranglihok Diengdoh, was recognised for her innovative excellence in epoxy resin furniture. As the visionary founder of a creative and sustainable venture specialising in epoxy resin furniture and home décor, her innovative craftsmanship transforms scrap wood, dried leaves, discarded flowers, and other natural materials into elegant, eco-friendly products such as dining tables, wall clocks, and art pieces. Her venture promotes resource preservation by blending artistry with sustainability, while also supporting local artisans and celebrating cultural heritage. The venture exemplifies a harmonious fusion of creativity, environmental consciousness, and community empowerment.
The next awardee was Anumahasa Sna, recognised for her selfless dedication to promoting organically farmed turmeric in Jaintia Hills. She is a pioneering entrepreneur known for her commitment to sustainable agriculture and organic farming centered around turmeric. Through her relentless efforts, she has established herself as a leader in cultivating and marketing organic turmeric, alongside other forest and agricultural produce. Her innovative approach and commitment to quality have not only elevated her brand but have also contributed to the promotion of eco-friendly practices. Her work exemplifies resilience, vision, and a visible positive impact on the community, as well as the sustainable use of natural resources. An individual who believes that “thinking big and beginning small” can lead to success with perseverance, she serves as an inspiration.
The Lurshai Pottery Co-operative Society, rooted in Jaintia Hills and represented by Merlishia Shylla as the secretary, was the next awardee. The society stands as a testament to cultural preservation and heritage. Renowned for its traditional black pottery, the artisans of Lurshai, as a cooperative society, have meticulously upheld centuries-old techniques, ensuring the continuity of this unique craft. Their dedication has not only enriched the cultural fabric of the region but has also showcased the artistry and identity of the Jaintia community. The cooperative society has kept their ancestral legacy alive, blending tradition with timeless craftsmanship by producing exquisite handcrafted pottery.
In their acceptance speeches, the awardees narrated that their beginnings were not easy, as they faced numerous failures along the way. However, perseverance and a never-give-up attitude sustained their efforts, enabling them to reach their current level of success. The recognition by the Rotary Club is a testament to the success they have achieved through their hard-fought journey.
The Annual Vocational Award Ceremony was graced by the esteemed social worker and journalist, Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim, who served as the chief guest for the evening.
