RAWALPINDI, Feb 25: With India and New Zealand having secured their spots in the semi-finals from Group A, the focus now shifts to the fiercely contested Group B, where all four teams remain in contention.
The much-anticipated clash between Australia and South Africa was abandoned without a ball being bowled, resulting in both teams sharing a point. This leaves the Proteas and the Aussies level on three points each, with South Africa topping the table due to a superior Net Run Rate (NRR).
South Africa: A Win Away from Sealing the Spot
The Proteas are in a strong position to advance, thanks to their commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan, which boosted their NRR to +2.140. A win against England in their final fixture will guarantee their place in the semis.
Even if they falter against England, South Africa could still qualify—provided England fail to win both of their remaining matches.
Australia: Destiny in Their Own Hands
The two-time Champions Trophy winners remain in control of their fate. A victory over Afghanistan in their final group-stage game will be enough to see them through.
However, if Australia lose to Afghanistan, their hopes will rest on South Africa defeating England.
England: A Knockout Pathway
After their opening defeat to Australia, Jos Buttler’s men face a must-win situation. They need victories in both their remaining games to stay in the hunt for the semi-finals.
A crucial clash against Afghanistan on Wednesday could set the tone for the rest of the group. If both Australia and South Africa lose their final matches, the winner of England vs Afghanistan will progress.
Afghanistan: An Uphill Battle
A heavy defeat to South Africa pushed Afghanistan to the bottom of Group B. With fixtures against England and Australia still to come, Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side must pull off back-to-back wins against the tournament heavyweights to keep their qualification hopes alive.
With each remaining Group B match now carrying knockout-like stakes, the race to the semi-finals promises to be a thrilling battle till the very end. (Agencies)
