Woman held after newborn thrown from hotel window
Paris, Feb 25: A young American woman on a European trip was taken into custody after she allegedly threw a newborn out of a hotel window in Paris, killing the baby, authorities said on Tuesday. The baby was reportedly thrown from a second-floor window of a hotel on Monday morning, according to the Paris prosecutor. Emergency responders rushed the newborn to the hospital, but the child was pronounced dead. The mother was travelling through Europe from the US with a group of young adults. She was taken to a hospital for medical treatment following childbirth and has been placed in custody there, officials said. The child protection police unit has been tasked with investigating the case as a homicide of a minor under 15 years old. Authorities are considering the possibility of pregnancy denial, a condition in which a woman remains unaware of or in denial about her pregnancy until labour. (AP)
Pak SC to hear Imran’s pleas against alleged poll rigging
Islamabad, Feb 25: Pakistan’s Supreme Court will take up on Friday petitions filed by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan seeking a judicial probe into the May 9 violence and alleged rigging of last year’s general elections, according to media reports on Tuesday. A five-member constitutional bench of the apex court led by Justice Aminuddin Khan will conduct the hearing, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Khan’s petition for the May 9 investigation was filed in December last year. On May 9, 2023, violent protests erupted after Khan’s arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. His party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander house) and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The PTI leadership alleges that May 9 was planned by its opponents. Khan had said he was implicated in the cases related to the violence as a result of a “well-orchestrated plan” to “harass” him for political reasons. (PTI)
Trial begins in Germany for 4 alleged Hamas members
Berlin, Feb 25: A trial began Tuesday in Germany for four alleged Hamas members suspected of organizing weapons caches across Europe. They are accused of seeking out and setting up weapons depots for the militant group across Europe so militants could later use the firearms and ammunition for attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets on the continent, prosecutors said when filing charges last year. The weapons were allegedly moved around Europe in preparation for Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack against Israel, prosecutors said. Around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in that attack, and about 250 taken hostage. The attack triggered Israel’s air and ground offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 48,200 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.Hamas also considered targeting the Israeli embassy in Berlin, the area around Tempelhof Airport in the capital and the US Ramstein Air Base in Germany, authorities said.
