SHILLONG, March 4: Shillong Cantonment Board CEO Ayush Maurya has vowed to take strict action against unauthorised parking in the Cantonment area. He warned that violators, especially those overcharging or operating illegally, would face penalties.
He explained that parking tenders come with clear contract terms, including guidelines on whether both-side parking is allowed. “In certain areas, where space permits, both-side parking is allowed. However, if contractors overcharge beyond the prescribed rate or operate in unauthorised locations, penalties will be imposed,” he added.
On the possibility of adding new parking spaces within the Cantonment area, Maurya clarified that no such proposal exists at the moment. “Shillong’s traffic congestion is a major issue, and the state government is working on creating designated parking zones. If a formal request comes from the government, we will consider it, but any such decision requires consultation with multiple stakeholders,” he said.
Illegal parking along both sides of the road remains a concern, and the Cantonment Board has already issued warnings. “If we receive complaints or notice violations during routine checks, action will be taken as per the contract terms,” Maurya warned.
