SHILLONG, March 4: The Meghalaya government, on Tuesday, launched the One Time Settlement (OTS) Scheme 2025, which will waive off surcharge amounts totaling Rs 26 crore for 45,000 small consumers of MeECL whose electricity bills have been overdue for years.
Announcing the scheme, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the government aims to provide an opportunity for even the smallest consumers to clear their outstanding dues.
Under this scheme, the government will write off all surcharge amounts, while 40% of the principal amount can be paid as a down payment. The remaining 60% can be paid in interest-free installments.
According to Sangma, this initiative will provide relief to approximately 45,000 consumers, whose dues have been pending for 10-20 years, with Rs 26 crore in surcharges being waived.
It was further informed that the total outstanding dues have accumulated to Rs 119 crore over the years. The chief minister urged consumers to take advantage of the scheme and settle their dues once and for all.
The OTS Scheme 2025 will be effective from March 1 to March 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also flagged off six vehicles equipped with aerial lift insulated buckets, designed to safely and efficiently access power lines at various heights and locations.
Until now, MePDCL has relied solely on conventional vehicles and ladders for restoration work. These new vehicles are expected to enhance maintenance services and reduce power outage durations.
The six vehicles have been procured at a cost of Rs 1.48 crore.
